Until the early 19th century few people ever journeyed more than twenty miles away from the village in which they were born. Travel was either by stagecoach or on horseback. and was far too expansive for the average working man.
With the arrival of the railways in the 1840s, cheap travel bacame avaible to all. Employers were discovering that they workes were a lot more productive if they were given some time off. Therefore, trips to resort towns like Blackpool became very popular for the workers of Manchester and the North.
The most striking difference between holidays in the 18th century and the 19th century was the Victorian holiday was a family affair. The holidays of the 18th century were pricipally sacial occasion, and parents usually left their children at home.In Victorian times the new, working class holidaymarkers did not have the money to leave their children whith babysitters, so they had to take them along on the holiday.
It was in the 18th century that Dr Richard Russel first suggest that sea water might be efficacious for a variety of ills, which started the popular love of seaside holidays that continues to this day.
Bathing became popular among young and single holidaymarkers, although for many years in Britain man and women were segreated on separated beaches. Ladies would change into a long, concealing one-paice costume in a bathing machine, which was than pulled down to the water’s adge. Men on their beaches oftene bathed naked and were fined if they came whithin 30 metres of the ladies’ beach. The popularity of seaside resorts and annual holiday grew immensely. However, facilities and accomodation did not keep pace. During the summer season, promenades and beaches were always crowded, and sometimes up to a dozen people mighy be sharlong one bed. In addition to poor accomodation, service was often dreadful, servants were badtempered and unfriendly, and the food was often almost inedible.
The whole field of holiday travel was ripe for reorganizzation.
This is precisely what the far-sighted Thomas Cook set about doing. He recognized a market for organized tours. The first Cook’s tour to Liverpool was masterpiece. Every detail of his package holiday tour was taken care of: he got four raiway companies to trasport his tourist at special rates, he arranged day trips to Snowdon and Caernafon, and he found good restaurants and hotels for his customers. Continental Europe was already a popular holiday destination for the aristocracy. Its appeal grew when their regular English destinations were flooded by middle class professionals. Because they wanted to avoid the croeded English resorts, the upper classes began to holiday in Geneva, Paris and rome. Mr Cook immediately started organizing affordable tours for those places, too. In 1855 his first continental tour went to the Paris Exhibition. This €10 trip was a huge success. For the next 50 years, Cook and his son organized trips to Switzerland for winter sports, the Middl East, America, Canada and, of course, the continent. Along the way they invented the traveller’s cheque, too. By the time of Cook’s death, his son had become responsible for an organization with offices in nearly every country on the globe. This overhauld of the characteristic holiday spirit was truly a remarkable achevement for a man who started his life apprenticed to a market gardener. What would Mr Cook say of today’s air travel and space tourist?

Scusate se ci sn degli errori..
‘in germany,i fell european.in england,i feel english,’saysjoss.every two weeks, joss leaves his farmhouse home near cambridge for another farmhouse near nuremberg.’both places are really flat,’says joss.
it’s a strage choice of lanscape for a snowboard designer.’i design in england, build in germany, then drive to switzerland to test the board.’the distance between my homes in england and germany is almost 1,000 km door-to-door.he knows this because he sometimes drives.it makesa nice change from flying.joss flew 100 times last year.he doesent’t mind all the air travel, but there are disadvantages.’it’s exhausting, and i’ve always got a cold’,he says ‘people think it’s glamorous, but i don’t fly first class.’
in each country he has a social life and a local pub.although joss speaks german, peolpe in nuremberg always want to practise their english.in cambridge,he lives with his partener, kate.she travels a lot in in her jo,too.’i call her before bedtime.sometimes our planes cross in the skies.’
in nuremberg,he rents a room with his colleague.’there,i eat more meat and drink more beer.i watch tv because i don’t have it at home.i know all the german celebs!i’m not lonely.i have a second home, not a hotel room.i have a german lifein germany, and an english life in england’.

x favore rispondetemi in base a qst testo qst domande
what does he do?

how often does he travel ?how does he travel?

what kind of house does he have in each country?

what kind of lifestyle does her partener have?

is there anything he misses or doesent’ like?

Brano:
I had a fantastic holiday last summer. I went to Greece with my friends, Trudy and Jane.
We didn’t have much money, so we travelled by train and boat. We eventually arrived on the island of Santorini. We stayed in a small hotel and we shared a room. It was very cheap, butclean. Every day we got up quite late and had breakfast on the terrace outside the hotel. Then we went to the beach and swarm or sunbathed for a couple of hours, We bought food from a shop for lunch, and ate it on he beach. In the afternoon we went walking or cycling. We had dinner in the hotel resaurant every evening. After dinner we wet to the disco. We didn’t go to bed until after one o’ clock. I had a great time!
Domande:
1) How did they get there?
2) Where did they stay?
3) What did thay do in the morning?
4) Where did they have their lunch?
5) What did they do in the afternoon?
6) What did the do in the evenings?
7)What time did they go to bed?

DIALOGUE
SARAH Hi Maria
MARIA Hi Sarah. I’ll be with you in a moment. Here you are. This is your itinerary. Take a look and see if you like it. Once in Dublin, you pick up your car at Avis Airport car rental.
SARAH What’s sort of car are we get?
MARIA I don’t know the make or model exactly, but it’s going to be small and comfortable
SARAH Where are we spending our first night?
MARIA You’re going to spend your first night in Galway
SARAH What hotel are we staying at?
MARIA At a three star hotel called the Star of the Sea. It overlooks the sea front
SARAH How much does it cost?
MARIA It’s only €40 per person per night and English breakfast is included
SARAH Where are we driving to on the following day?
MARIA On the following day you are driving to Kylemore Abbey. It’s a really romantic place in the heart of Connemara. Then you follow the winding coast road to Killary Fjord. The views are lovely from there.
SARAH Are we going to spend night in some isolated in Connemara?
MARIA No, don’t worry. You are not going to spend the night at some spooky spot in Connemara. Once you have visited the abbey and admired the scenery of the county you go back to Galway and spend the night at the same hotel as the night before
SARAH Are we going to see the cliffs of moher?
MARIA Yes, of course. On Sunday morning, check out and leave for the Cliffs of Moher
SARAH Is it a long way?
MARIA Well, it’s going to take you four hours probably, because of the windings roads. But while driving to the Cliffs of Moher, don’t miss the opportunity to visit a local market selling handicrafts and stop at one of the small cottages on the way that offer hand-knitted jumpers
SARAH Where are we going after that?
MARIA After that you are going to Clifden and you’re stopping at the Foyles Hotel for the night. I’m afraid it’s not very cheap but it provides a first-rate service and it’s right in the heart of the city
SARAH Is Clonmacknoise far from Clifden?
MARIA No, Clonmacknoise isn’t too far but as it closes at five o’clock I don’t think you can make it. So the best thing to do is to go there the following day on your back to Dublin
SARAH What time are we catching the plane?
MARIA You’re going to catch the 7.30 plane to London Heathrow
SARAH It sounds great!

As often happens when a project turns out to be as successful as Club Med, there is some disagreement about who should have the credit. Some would give it to Gérard Blitz, a Belgian who in the 1920s and 1930s had won several Olympic medals for swimming and water polo. After the second world war he was running transit camps for Belgian soldiers returning home. He bought tarpaulins and other useful materials from a French factory owned by Gilbert Trigano’s family. Gérard suggested to Gilbert (or it may have been the other way round) that, with Europe at peace, they should get into the holiday business. In 1950 they bought some American army surplus tents and camp beds, set them up in a pine wood on the Spanish island of Majorca and called the enterprise Club Méditerranée.
The idea was a succes from the start. Holiday camps werw non new. In Britain Billy Butlin’s camps had provided cheap refuges from often rainy summers. But Club Med offered reliable sunshine and warm seas, along with Gérard Blitz called “an antidote to civilisation”. He saw no need for the holiday “villages” to make money, as long as they covered this costs. What mattered was that people coluld be liberated from their working lives for a week or two and live as the noble savage, do some cooking if they wanted to and help with the rudimentary washing-up. It was Mr Trigano who turned Club Med into a profitable business. Tents were soon replaced by thatched huts. During Mr Trigano’s four decades with Club Med, bungalows and hotels were added with the soft comforts of home. Staff were hired to do the chores. There were Club med establishments throughout the world, from Tahiti to, ahem, Bulgaria.
Mr Trigano did not discard the romanticism that had made Club Med so appealing when he and his early partner had banged in the tent pegs in Majorca. Rather, he made Club Med’s hint of a sensual paradise a key parts of its sales appeal. The partly Belgian idea which had been launched in Spain became as a French as Bardot. As a loyal Frenchman, Mr Trigano made Club Med a messenger of his country’s superiority in food, wine, language and indeed culture. Then, suddenly, it seemed that paradise was lost.
End of enchantment
After club med had showed losses for three successive years in the 1990s, Harvard Business School chillingly used the firm as a study to illustrate “the death of a brand”. Club med had become Club Red because the young people who were once its customers were now middle-aged and less thrilled by its offer of organised, communal living, however comfortable. The next generation saw Club Med as just another big hotel chain.
